An organization notebook is an excellent way to stay on top of your finances. Being on your own, financially, is scary, but you sound like you are on the right track!

Start an excel spreadsheet and figure all monthly bills, due date and then divide by paycheck. If you do this on a 3 pay day month then there is a little extra wiggle room. Rather than use envelopes where someone could steal your actual cash, make the automatic deduction in the checkbook for that payperiod then just go back and fill in the date and check number when the bill arrives. As for left over, the checkbook balance shows what is figured in on the excel spreadsheet for groceries, gas and entertainment. When this amount is gone – it’s done until the next payperiod. The remaineder of the check (albiet a small amount) is automatically transferred to savings so it is not accessible. So in short, the balance left in the checkbook is spread out over food, gas and entertainment – when the checkbook balance is zero then no more spending occurs – altough the actual bank account might have some money left in it for the bills that are yet to be paid from that paycheck. I feel for Carrie. I am in the sixth week of my first real job and its daunting being completely on my own, financially. One thing that I do to help me stay organized with respects to my finances is keep a HUGE organization notebook with ALL of my expenses: bills, online shopping receipts, grocery receipts, a budget that I try to stick too, calendar, etc. It helps hold me accountable and responsible. Hope this helps!

My Parents started doing this 65 years ago and worked well for them. I learned early on to do this and it works. When the $$ is gone, It’s gone! My parents lived frugally but well. They were millionares when they passed away. Hope I can do the same…On our way!
