Rollback at the Pump: How to Save More Money on Gas

Good Morning SMC Readers!!!! Today is Hump Day and the first day since this past weekend that I have been able to get myself together. On Saturday alone, I started Operation Wedding (again), attended the baby shower of a great friend from high school, and ended the evening at a post-wedding event hosted by my sister and her hubby. The next day was spent starting a new book, The Help by Kathryn Sockett and patiently awaiting the arrival of the cutest fat baby I have ever seen, although I didn’t witness the birth as mentioned on my bucket list. With all of that said, I am ready to get back to financial business.

In the midst of all of my running around, I did notice that the price of gas has gone down. Even yesterday, I witnessed people lined up at the pumps as if that was their last opportunity at fueling their cars and then this morning I found out the great news explaining why at some local pumps gas prices are significantly lower. Ready for it??? Walmart is “rolling back” at the pump. In a reply to customer’s concerns about the increasing price of gas being one of their highest budget busters, Walmart explains in today’s press release, that the “90-day Rollback at the pump [will] give customers a savings of 10 cents a gallon on all fuel, gas and diesel, at participating Murphy USA and Walmart gas stations”. What’s the catch? The discount applies to gas purchases made when using a reloadable Walmart gift card, reloadable Walmart MoneyCard® or Walmart credit card from June 29 through September 30, 2011. Stephen Quinn, Chief Marketing Officer for Walmart revealed, “Our goal is to make it easy for everyone to save and live better, and we think this gas program is leading in the market because it doesn’t require any additional purchase, loyalty card or other restrictions.”

Honestly, I’m all for lowering expenses and 10 cents a gallon can and will make a difference. If you find it hard to believe that 10 cents will make a difference, please allow me to refresh your memory with the “pics at the pump” that readers like you sent in. Simply put, purchasing a reloadable gift card to pay for my gas at a lower rate is worth standing in line for, even though I detest standing in line at Walmart.

States with participating gas stations are:

  • Arkansas
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Michigan • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • New Mexico
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas

Free McDonalds Strawberry Lemonade: McSwag Here I Come!

Please allow me to introduce you to my new summer friend, the Frozen Strawberry Lemonade from McDonalds. Honestly, all of the frozen drinks I have tasted from good ole Mickey Ds, have been winners; however, the Frozen Strawberry Lemonade is the only one that I have found more than one way to drink it. With the FREE BOGO offer that ends on July 31st, you can afford to drink it as is or as an adult lemonadeJ To get your “grown folk” on, you can try this simple drink recipe:

Ciroc + McDonalds Strawberry Lemonade (McSwag or McRoc depends on who you ask)
One part Ciroc (Red Berry, but I use Coconut) and Strawberry Lemonade

My friend Nia from college played me via twitter for my McSwag, but I know she is going to try it. Are you? To print your buy one get one FREE offer from McDonalds, click here.

Ways to Fund Your Bucket List

SMC Answers Your Email Questions:

Good Morning,

I have started to create a bucket list and I have found that actually doing a lot of things requires a lot of money. How do I fund my bucket list activities on a budget?

Congratulations on starting your bucket list or a kick ass lifestyle list, as one blogger refers to it. I think that is pretty awesome! I have found that bucket lists activities bring happiness and remind people to have fun and be open to new experiences. However, paying for these experiences can quickly add up. My bucket list is a mix of activities and experiences that could break the bank or that don’t require any money at all. First off, I would evaluate the items you have listed on your list already. Do they all include some type of financial component? If so, try adding some free activities that you always wanted to do but never made time for. I’ve always wanted to witness a birth and that’s free. Next, try signing up for flash sale sites like Groupon.com, HalfoffDepot.com, and Living Social because they are always having great deals. I’m not sure what exactly is on your list, but I can show you some of the deals I have found that correlate with my own list (btw, if anyone wants to donate to my bucket list fund, email me:)…:

Another way you can help to fund you bucket list/kickass lifestyle list is by adding an additional category to your financial budget. Assuming you divide your income, you could start a rainy day fund by putting aside extra change into a piggy bank and cashing it in every few months, add $10-$20 here or there by reducing your Starbucks visits every now and then, or even ask for activities for gifts for your birthday, graduation, anniversaries, or special holidays. People used to laugh at me for saving pennies. I thought then and I still believe now that every penny counts and it proved true the first time I emptied my little red wagon that held about $75 in spare change. That $75 could have paid for the Smoky Mountain Adventure Package, above, which includes zip lining, rafting, river tubing (something I’ve done before and really enjoy) and horseback riding (another pastime I once enjoyed). Lastly, I would try to space out the activities. You don’t have to become a adrenaline junky overnight. Overall, remember that it is supposed to be fun and even life altering.. don’t get caught up in the finances.

How to Update Your Shoes Without Spending a Dime

Cheap Chic: Good for the Sole

Not too long ago I was checking out Facebook and came across a very cute DIY Fashion project. My cousin, Traci, took some ordinary black shoes from…..wait for it……Wal-Mart and made them look AWESOME without breaking the bank and spending all day on a DIY project. Let’s see how they turned out.

Here is what they looked like before she started Metro Seven Shoes:

First, she painted the heel gold:

Then she attached some hand-tied bows made from the back-tie of a blouse to the simple black sling-backs. It is also a good way to tighten the strap if it loosens, as sling backs tend to do.

And Viola!!!!

In my opinion, the shoes turned out great! I love ruffles, bows, and anything that is ultra feminine, plus the colors are right up my alley. Maybe I’ll try this on my pair of Steve Madden sling backs that I haven’t worn in a while. I’m sure these would up the ante of the most important fashion basic for every woman, the LBD! When I make a pair of my own, I will call them my ICE COLD shoes (s/o to the men of Alpha Phi Alpha ~Skee Phi~)
