Rollback at the Pump: How to Save More Money on Gas

Good Morning SMC Readers!!!! Today is Hump Day and the first day since this past weekend that I have been able to get myself together. On Saturday alone, I started Operation Wedding (again), attended the baby shower of a great friend from high school, and ended the evening at a post-wedding event hosted by my sister and her hubby. The next day was spent starting a new book, The Help by Kathryn Sockett and patiently awaiting the arrival of the cutest fat baby I have ever seen, although I didn’t witness the birth as mentioned on my bucket list. With all of that said, I am ready to get back to financial business.

In the midst of all of my running around, I did notice that the price of gas has gone down. Even yesterday, I witnessed people lined up at the pumps as if that was their last opportunity at fueling their cars and then this morning I found out the great news explaining why at some local pumps gas prices are significantly lower. Ready for it??? Walmart is “rolling back” at the pump. In a reply to customer’s concerns about the increasing price of gas being one of their highest budget busters, Walmart explains in today’s press release, that the “90-day Rollback at the pump [will] give customers a savings of 10 cents a gallon on all fuel, gas and diesel, at participating Murphy USA and Walmart gas stations”. What’s the catch? The discount applies to gas purchases made when using a reloadable Walmart gift card, reloadable Walmart MoneyCard® or Walmart credit card from June 29 through September 30, 2011. Stephen Quinn, Chief Marketing Officer for Walmart revealed, “Our goal is to make it easy for everyone to save and live better, and we think this gas program is leading in the market because it doesn’t require any additional purchase, loyalty card or other restrictions.”

Honestly, I’m all for lowering expenses and 10 cents a gallon can and will make a difference. If you find it hard to believe that 10 cents will make a difference, please allow me to refresh your memory with the “pics at the pump” that readers like you sent in. Simply put, purchasing a reloadable gift card to pay for my gas at a lower rate is worth standing in line for, even though I detest standing in line at Walmart.

States with participating gas stations are:

  • Arkansas
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Michigan • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • New Mexico
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas

Ways to Fund Your Bucket List

SMC Answers Your Email Questions:

Good Morning,

I have started to create a bucket list and I have found that actually doing a lot of things requires a lot of money. How do I fund my bucket list activities on a budget?

Congratulations on starting your bucket list or a kick ass lifestyle list, as one blogger refers to it. I think that is pretty awesome! I have found that bucket lists activities bring happiness and remind people to have fun and be open to new experiences. However, paying for these experiences can quickly add up. My bucket list is a mix of activities and experiences that could break the bank or that don’t require any money at all. First off, I would evaluate the items you have listed on your list already. Do they all include some type of financial component? If so, try adding some free activities that you always wanted to do but never made time for. I’ve always wanted to witness a birth and that’s free. Next, try signing up for flash sale sites like Groupon.com, HalfoffDepot.com, and Living Social because they are always having great deals. I’m not sure what exactly is on your list, but I can show you some of the deals I have found that correlate with my own list (btw, if anyone wants to donate to my bucket list fund, email me:)…:

Another way you can help to fund you bucket list/kickass lifestyle list is by adding an additional category to your financial budget. Assuming you divide your income, you could start a rainy day fund by putting aside extra change into a piggy bank and cashing it in every few months, add $10-$20 here or there by reducing your Starbucks visits every now and then, or even ask for activities for gifts for your birthday, graduation, anniversaries, or special holidays. People used to laugh at me for saving pennies. I thought then and I still believe now that every penny counts and it proved true the first time I emptied my little red wagon that held about $75 in spare change. That $75 could have paid for the Smoky Mountain Adventure Package, above, which includes zip lining, rafting, river tubing (something I’ve done before and really enjoy) and horseback riding (another pastime I once enjoyed). Lastly, I would try to space out the activities. You don’t have to become a adrenaline junky overnight. Overall, remember that it is supposed to be fun and even life altering.. don’t get caught up in the finances.

Vamp Up Your Home on A Budget!

I believe that one’s home should be a reflection of one’s personality. It should be a place that you want to come home to, hang out in, and entertain in. A friend of mine from high school gave me one of the greatest design compliments when he told me that my house was so me. So how do we help make your house more you? Here are some of my suggestions…

  1. Know when to splurge and when to save. I discussed this regarding fashion in an earlier post, but the same advice rings true here. Splurge on the bones of the room: like your sofa, bed, closet systems, and chairs (Disclaimer: I have a serious addiction to chairs. I have three in my bedroom alone). Save on the fun things like trendy throw pillows and other decorative accessories.

  1. Have a Signature Scent. I believe a woman should never leave the house without a scent. I find it very feminine, alluring, and sexy to do so. The same goes for your home. Find a candle, air wick, or incense to fill your home with a scent that you love.

  2. Make Every Inch Count. Most people opt out of using their vertical space. Find storage solutions that make the most of your space.

  3. Make and Break Your Own Rules. Just because the floor plan labels a room something doesn’t mean that’s how you have to keep it. In a house I was doing, I moved a closet to another bedroom and put the home office into the closet. Most people would make their extra bedroom into an office. However, I thought it would be a better use of space to move the home office into the closet because it was just a desk, chair, and storage. Whereas one’s closet consist of clothes for all seasons and occasions, accessories, shoes, large mirror, etc. times two if your share your closet with your significant other. Why try to stuff all of your clothes and accessories into a standard walk in closet when you can take an entire bedroom?

  4. Don’t be afraid to display what you love. My sister has her collectors Barbie dolls on display in her house. I have ballet figurines and pictures of people I love displayed in various places in my house. It is all about what you love.

  5. Don’t be afraid to color outside of the lines. I have wanted to paint a wall black since I was about 16 years old. When I finally got my place, I had no one telling me that I couldn’t do it. People said that it would make the room feel smaller, creepy, and a little goth, but I thought it I could make it fun or sophisticated. My BFFSLFG (Best Friend Forever Since Like First Grade) suggested that I use chalkboard paint so that people could write on the wall. BEST ADVICE EVER!!! People love coming over and writing little notes and I love discovering new messages on the wall.

  6. Only buy what you love. If you like chandeliers, bling it out! I saw a big giraffe while shopping with my mentee Dana and thought, who would put this in their house. Then I saw something similar in a friend’s house and thought, wow…that looks awesome. I like nail trimmed furniture and almost anything tufted. In my opinion, those are two very classic design features that can go in a traditional, eclectic, or gender neutral room. Buying what you love will also help keep your wallet fatter, as you will see in the next point.

  7. Shop Within Your House. Instead of buying new things to redecorate when you are bored with your space, shop within your own stuff. Tired of seeing those same throw pillows on your sofa, put them in a bedroom for a new punch of color or print. I have justified my chair addiction to some of my family members by explaining that when I am tired of my fuchsia chairs in my living room, I will just move them to the guest room. Viola, your rooms will look totally different without you having to spend any extra cash.
  8. Stop Saving. No, I don’t mean stop saving money. Stop saving things for a special moment. Make ordinary moments special. I was reading a memoir by Gretchen Rubin called The Happiness Project and she discussed how she wanted to stop saving the good china for special occasions because it never got used. It made me think of my mother, who is always saving something and never using it. A few years ago, I gave my mother a beautiful jewelry box and yet she still puts her jewelry in some Popsicle stick creation I made when I was 7 years old- all because she is saving the nicer box for when she can organize and update the pieces she already owns. I stopped saving the good stuff and I am enjoying the good life.
  9. Know when to shop. Everyone has their own special style and taste, but how do you find items in your budget. To get exactly what you want on your budget takes time and patience. I wanted a button tufted headboard  or a nice floor lamp for my bedroom but I was not willing to play an arm and a leg for it. So, I did my research and waited until a holiday to make my big purchase. Holidays are always a good time to shop because you can usually find a discount on the item or free shipping.

    BONUS

Don’t be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone. Venture outside of the traditional big furniture chain stores. You don’t want someone walking in your house and say, oh wow, we have that too. Try Overstock.com (my fav). The prices are reasonable but you will not beat their shipping fees anywhere. HomeGoods is another favorite. I have become such a regular in there that I even know the days they get a new truck in…lol. HomeGoods is the place that has fostered my chair addiction, by the way. Craigslist is another good option, just remember that the same rules for safe shopping for Craigslist cars applies here. Check out the safety reminders, here. Lastly, antique markets. It sounds old and lame and something a fab twenty something like myself would not be into, but I have found some really cool stuff in vintage and antique markets. #imjustsaying

Splurge vs. Save: Fashion Basics Every Woman Should Own

I remember being in college trying to explain to my Dad how and why I spent $300 on a pair of Dolce & Gabbana strappy wedged heeled sandals. I tried to compare my growing shoe collection with his collection of art. Both deserve to be seen, both are an investment, and both, shoes and art, are an expression of personal style. My Dad redirected with one irrefutable point, shoes unlike art don’t increase in value over time. Ugh!! Looking back those shoes are still in great condition, 7 years later, which got me thinking. When faced with the choice to splurge or save, how do you decide?

Personally, I suggest splurging on the basics and saving on more trendy items. Check out my inspirations below!!

5 Important Tips For Student Banking

Check Your Account Daily

Everyone, not just college students, should check their finances daily. By doing this, you are always aware of exactly how much money you have at all times. Why would you allow someone to know more about your money than you?

Overdraft Protection

Two words… Overdraft Protection. Sign up for Overdraft Protection when you sign up for your account. Doing this will help you avoid penalty fees for going over your limit. I know someone who had about $400 in one month tacked onto her checking statement for overdraft fees and penalties. Obviously, she does not follow step one and two. Learn from her mistakes.

Set Realistic Alerts for EACH Account

The very same person mentioned in the tip above became my inspiration for this one. If your account consistently holds a balance under $100, setting your banking alert for $100 will not help you. Instead, pick an emergency figure that is more realistic for reminding you, hey you need to make a deposit. It will help keep you out of the red.

In the Choice between a Debit and Credit Card- Choose Debit

Debit equals your own cash and credit equals money borrowed plus interest. If you have the money in your account, swipe your debit card!

If Banks Can’t Offer the Basics… Walk Away

If the bank cannot offer you FREE checking, FREE online banking, and most importantly for the student, no minimum balance, then walk away because another bank will.

Wedding Programs: Buy vs. DIY

Weddings are expensive and it isn’t until you are preparing for your big day or the big day of someone close to you that you realize just what goes into it. In Operation Wedding, I told you that this wedding experience could reveal the possibility of a Buy vs. D.I.Y post. Well SMC readers, this is it!! Wedding Programs- Buy or D.I.Y?

Here are some pictures I used to get some inspiration:

There should be no surprise that I chose to DIY vs. Buy for this particular project. Financially, it appears to be more economically feasible to just make your own or someone else’s programs if you enjoy creative projects, which I do. Usually arts and craft projects relax me, but this time that was not the case. Between the weight of the deadline, the storms that kept knocking the power out (the same storm that caused the bride to be locked inside of a Hallmark store 2 days before the wedding, by the way), printer issues, and the pressure to get it just right, I almost lost my mind. Looking back, I learned A LOT about paper¸ people, programs, & printers and for the insight I gained, I am thankful for the experience. Bottom line is… I love my sister and my brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip D. Williams, and I hope that they liked the programs and dinner menus that came from a place of love.

So that takes me back to the original question, Should you Buy vs. DIY? I’m still not exactly sure. Knowing what I know now, the process would be significantly smoother if I ever chose to do something like this again. See how the programs and dinner menu turned out, click here.
